Community Council Meeting

February 6, 2019

Roll: Angie Francom, Jaclyn Wintle, Emily Devries, David Joy, Matt Patterson, Susan Roane, and David Sowby

D, F and I report for 1st quarter shows that students grades stayed about the same as 1st quarter grades were.

Special Education Moderate Unit:

  1. Some of our special education students are in a tough place where they do not fit into an in house unit, but need more evaluation and tracking.
  2. Orion has hired a new Special Education Aide
  3. The program is successful already. We are seeing success with these students where they are participating in class, attending class and learning to better interact with others.

New Student Advocate

  1. Orion has hired a new student advocate, Erin Walker, to work with students

Accreditation:

  1. Mr. Patterson thanked those parents who attended the parent meeting during Accreditation.
  2. Orion received a great review from the Accreditation team.
  3. We received a pass grade from the team
  4. One of the team commented that she had never seen a school where students are cared for more than here at Orion.

Accreditation feed back

  1. More longitude data on students, meaning where they are at as they enter the school and how they end up scholastically as they leave to move on to high school.

Principals Report

Goal 1

Ensure students have engaging and connected experiences to their school, peers, and community in a safe and secure educational setting. Also, implement high quality behavioral and interventions to support the social and emotional needs of all students

Goal 2

Ensuring programs and systems that support a comprehensive, consistent, responsive, engaging and empowering learning environment for all students. By delivering high quality instruction through leadership, modeling, advocacy, collaboration, (PLC’s). Collectively using specific data to focus on increasing student learning and proficiency of all students.



How are the Titan Tags being given to students?

  1. Teachers, Staff, Administration, give them to students as they earn them
  2. Students can nominate other students to receive a Titan Tag
  3. Students love receiving these buttons
  4. One of the council members mentioned that these buttons have been a great thing for their daughter. They stated that she was so afraid to come to Orion and the 3 buttons she has received have helped her.
  5. A suggestion was made to make sure that all students, including those who are willing to listen, and work hard, but may be overlooked as one who deserves a titan tag be given one.

Budget for 2018-2019

  1. Mr. Patterson explained the Trustland budget for the current year, and asked all Community Council members to look over the proposed budget and make adjustments and suggestions as they see needs.

Budget for 2019-2020

  1. The proposed Trustland budget for 2019-2020 was gone over so that each council member understands each proposal
  2. He asked each Council Member to go over this proposed budget and mark changes or questions they may have so that they can write this budget during the next Community Council Meeting.

There was a discussion on the Alex program and its benefits for Orion math students.

After school tutoring/mentoring students

  1. How can teachers tutor or mentor Orion students after school hours.
  2. In order to decide which teacher will be chosen to use the trustland money allocated for tutoring/mentoring the teachers will be asked to submit a type of grant application stating why there proposal would benefit students after school hours. These applications will then looked at and chosen by a committee.

One to One Technology replacement

  1. There was a need to up the amount allocated to this line item. There was more of a need for replacement and repair than anticipated.

Field Trips

  1. Mr. Patterson is looking at the possibility of requesting time for fieldtrips during a predetermined week.
  2. A request for a field trip would need to be submitted to the principal in advance so that they can be monitored and approved.
  3. The approved field trips will be funded through trustland funds.
  4. This will allow time for field trips without taking time out of all student’s schedules all year long.
  5. A concern was raised that we should make sure all students in the school have an opportunity to go on at least one field trip per year.

Latinos in action

  1. There is an affiliation fee of $700.00 per year
  2. This will be an actual class
  3. This teachers wage for this class will be taken from FTE funds
  4. Other schools who have this class are finding that the entire school is being lifted to a higher level

Summer Technology Boot Camp

  1. This will allow teachers to go to classes at a 2 day summer boot camp that will be held in June.
  2. This will allow teachers to be more proficient in using student’s chrome books for assignments
  3. Teachers would be paid $100.00 per day to attend this class.
  4. This will help teach how to be digitally appropriate
