Checking Out and Reading Ebooks on Your Chromebook

  1. In the Chrome browser, type in the address: www.soraapp.com
  2. Tap on the tab “Find My School”
  3. Tap on the words on the bottom “My School Isn’t Listed"
  4. In the search box, type in the word Orion
  5. Choose our school (Orion Junior High in Harrisville, Utah)
  6. Enter your username and password (please note, the username isn’t your entire email address, just the first part.  Example, the user name is smithjo, not This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
  7. You will be logged in and able to check out books and read books on your Chromebook.

Helpful Hints:

  • There are “Achievement” points you can earn in this program, but if you prefer not to participate in the program, just exit the pop up boxes displaying the achievements.
  • Borrow a book by tapping on the picture of the book.  Underneath the book, you will see the word “Borrow” or “Hold”.  
  • Give the book a minute to load and then start reading it.
  • All books are automatically returned, so you won’t have overdue books with the ebook system.
  • You can tap on the 3 horizontal lines in the right hand corner for a menu. You can add your public library card information to link to their ebooks too.
  • You can download the SORA app on your phone and read books from there too.

If you are looking for a great book, fill out the form below and Mrs. Hall will choose 3 books that would be great matches for your reading interests.  You will get a note that your books choices are ready.  Then you can come to the library within 2 days and take a look at the choices.  You can check out something that you will love to read!!  Happy Reading!!!

Utah Online Library Instructions

•       * Go to the website http://onlinelibrary.uen.org/ or click here  button utah online library(If you access this away from school, you may be asked for a username and password.  Username:  online  Password:  reader

•       * Under the General Reference Collection section, click on Gale Reference Collection Grades 9-12
•       * Click on Opposing Viewpoints in Context.  Use the search box or the subject headings to search for your topic.

Finding Ebooks to Use for Research

 

  1.  Click on the link “Library Catalog” at the top of this page.
  2. Choose “Orion Junior High”
  3. Click on the “Login” button on the top right corner of the page and log in using your school log in information.
  4. Be sure your name is displayed in the top right corner of the screen.
  5. Choose the “Catalog” tab at the top of the page.
  6. Under the search bar, there is a green bar with the words “Show More”.  Click on “Show More.”
  7. On the Material Types box, choose “Electronic Books (ebooks)”
  8. Type your search into the search bar.
  9. The electronic books titles will be displayed.  When you find a book you want to look at (the Unlimited Access books are best for research), click on the button that says “Open”.
  10. You can read the book online and get your research information.
  11. When you find a book you use, click on the “Add to this List” button that is located at the side of the search results.
  12. To make a bibliography, go to the left-hand side of the screen and click “Resource List”
  13. Click on the tab at the top that says “My List”.
  14. At the bottom of the page, you will see a button labelled “Go”.  Click on that button and your bibliography for that list will be generated.

 

 

Experiment With Coding!!!!

You may love playing computer games, but have you ever thought about designing them?  Follow the directions below to learn how to start coding.  It’s really the coolest thing in the world.

  1.  Go to code.org
  2.  In the lower part of the page, there is a link called “Try the Hour of Code”  (under Anna and Elsa).  Click that link.
  3.  In the Star Wars box, click "Go".
  4.  In the JavaScript box, click "Try Now".
  5.  Watch the video and follow the directions.  You need to get through all of the steps.  
  6. When you have completed all of the steps, you will see a certificate of completion.  Print it out.  Take it to Mr. Harris and he will give you a reward.

 

  

 

Steps to Access Ebooks

  1. On the Media Center webpage, click on the “Library Catalog” button.
  2. Choose Orion Junior High.
  3. Click on the Login button in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  4. Log in using the same information you would use to log into a computer at school.
  5. Click on the “Catalog” tab at the top of the page.
  6. On the left sidebar, click on the button “Follett Shelf”
  7. Search for the ebook that matches your topic.
  8. Click on the cover of the book to open it up and find information.

Are you researching issues for an argumentative writing?  Take a look at the site above to find great research help.  If you log in at a school computer, you don't need a username and password.  If you log in outside of school, use the following information:

You can now access ebooks on your own device.  We have some of the latest and greatest titles.  Follow the directions below to read ebooks on your device.

1. Find and download the app for Overdrive. The app icon looks like this

                       

2.  Search for Weber School District. Then find Orion Junior High.

3.  Log in using the same user name and password you use to log into a computer at school.

4.  Find and checkout books you want to read from the online library.

Library Policies and Procedures 

 

The library opens at 7:15 each morning.

The library will be open during both lunches, unless there is a class using the library during lunch.

The library closes each day at 3:00.

There are 12 computers in the library that may be used for school work.

Students should bring their school ID card in to the library to check out a book.
